This complex stairway, designed by George Wightwick for a shop in Plymouth, has been carefully studied and detailed in this drawing. While the stairs were depicted in the plans and sections of the building, its complicated joinery, mouldings and ornament demanded this special sheet showing two additional elevations of the stairs.

Notice that the elevations are labelled as 'Elevation on Line C to D on plan' and 'Elevation on Line E to F'. The plan of this project would have shown two reference lines that explicitly stated where the elevations of the stairs were drawn from. The craftsmen and builders who constructed these stairs would have had to reference both the plan and the details of the stairs to complete the project.
