This accomplished drawing of a section, elevation and plan surrounded by sketches and notes describes the construction for one of the domes at the Royal Hospital, London.
Nicholas Hawksmoor, a leading English Baroque architect, made this drawing in pen first before applying a light wash to render depth on the dome's elevation. The amount of annotation suggests that Hawksmoor used this drawing to analyse the structural engineering of the dome at an early stage of the design process.
