In 1556 Daniele Barbaro published his translation of Vitruvius using illustrations provided by Palladio. This is a study for one of these plates.
The drawing is interesting for scholars for many reasons. It shows a portrait image on one side and a landscape on the other. This makes it quite difficult to display both sides.
The drawing demonstrates Palladio's work in book illustration and is on display at the Palladio 500 exhibition. It shows that not only did he draw for the book, he made suggestions about the text too.
