The use of a stone or marble framing panel enclosing the first floor ('piano nobile') windows is probably of Islamic origin. Its first examples in Venice appeared in Veneto-Byzantine townhouses and it was later widely adopted for Gothic palaces. In some cases the framing panels were simply created in stucco|.
