The Doge’s Palace was built over the course of a century and parts of it had to be subsequently rebuilt more than once as a consequence of devastating fires. Little is left of the original Gothic interiors but the courtyard clearly demonstrates the reluctance to abandon the original style of the palace - the east wing combines a Renaissance upper part with a first floor Gothic arcade. This arcade is even continued in the 17th century facades to the south and west.
