The late Gothic period was characterised by a richly decorative style. This tendency had produced an early example in the extraordinary Ca’ d’Oro, the façade| of which features gilding, polychrome surfaces and elaborate carvings.

An outstanding if less imposing later example is the Palazzetto Contarini-Fasan| whose finely carved balustrades feature an original wheel motif.
