The late Gothic period was characterised by a richly decorative style. This tendency had produced an early example in the extraordinary Ca’ d’Oro, the façade of which features gilding, polychrome surfaces and elaborate carvings.

An outstanding if less imposing later example is the Palazzetto Contarini-Fasan whose finely carved balustrades feature an original wheel motif.
