Safety concerns limited the use of vaulting to religious architecture - the resulting concentrated loads on the foundations were generally to be avoided due to the instability of the city’s subsoil. Venetian Gothic palaces therefore lacked one of the defining characteristics of this style and Gothic forms were essentially employed for decorative purposes.
