The shortlist is announced for the Re-imagine Ageing Competition which RIBA Competitions is managing on behalf of McCarthy & Stone, the UK's leading retirement developer. The competition invited architects in the UK and the Republic of Ireland to design a new concept in retirement living for the post-war 'baby boom' generation. Competitors were tasked with thinking beyond what has been previously available in terms of retirement accommodation in the UK and create exciting and innovative designs to meet the demands of baby boomers looking for something a little different in later life.
The Judging Panel was delighted by the response to the competition which attracted 118 entries and by the mixture of creativity and pragmatism evident within the submitted designs. Following an anonymous appraisal of the proposals, the five practices short-listed (in alphabetical order) were as follows:
- AU Studio, London
- Inglis Badrashi Loddo Architects, London
- Living Space Architects with Hilary Lawson, Exeter
- Tom Russell Architects, Bristol
- wap architects, Sheffield
Panel members look forward to seeing further exploration and refinement of the Stage 1 design proposals when the short-listed practices present their schemes to the Panel in late April 2013.
