RIBA photography competition
Overall winner announced and postcard set of 10 now on sale

The RIBA launched its first photography competition in May, “Celebrating Architecture 2012”, looking for images that captured different interpretations of architecture in 2012 - the inspiring, the beautiful, the intriguing or even the bizarre!

Over 90 entries were received and judged by a panel that included Morley von Sternberg, professional photographer and Angela Brady, RIBA President and Jonathan Makepeace, RIBApix.

Ten images were selected as winners and the overall winner was announced by Angela Brady, at the RIBA Education Fundraising Dinner on the 28 June; -

2. Robert Elwall who passed away in March 2012 was a champion of architectural photography for over 30 years. Elwall enjoyed a distinguised career as a curator, author, critic and lecturer. He built at the RIBA the largest collection of architectural photography in the world – over 1.5 million images, including the preservation of many important photographic archives previously at risk. In 2006, he created RIBApix, a digital image database that today has over 60,000 images available to researchers and the public at large. Elwall curated dozens of exhibitions exploring the relationship between architecture, photography and society in libraries, museums and galleries. This competition is something that Angela Brady & he instigated earlier this year.

3.The RIBA Education Fund makes grants to students of architecture in the UK experiencing financial hardship. The RIBA Education Fund has been set up to ensure that the study of architecture remains financially accessible to all. The RIBA Education Fund supports students throughout their education, not only encouraging diversity, but also ensuring access to those who would otherwise struggle with the costs.
