RIBA/LSC Further Education Design Excellence Awards 2009

The RIBA and the Learning Skills Council have announced the shortlist for the Further Education Design Excellence Awards which recognise the buildings which deliver the most effective and innovative learning environment in a Further Education building. The winners will be announced at a ceremony on 18 June, and the winning architects or architectural teams responsible will be awarded £5,000 as a first prize. The entry which best addresses the sustainability agenda will be awarded a £2,000 Special prize.

 The shortlist includes:

 Middlesbrough College designed by Archial Architects Ltd

  • York College designed by Bond Bryan Architects
  • Highfields Automotive & Engineering Centre designed by Hawkins Brown Architects
  • Joseph Chamberlain College designed by Nicholas Hare Architects LLP
  • National Skills Academy for Finance designed by The Tooley & Foster Partnership

RIBA, Institute of Education & London Met Schools Design CPD Course

London Metropolitan University Department of Architecture and Spatial Design and the Institute of Education of the University of London, in partnership with the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Department for Children, Schools and Families, have jointly set up a multi-disciplinary Schools Design CPD course. The 2.5 day programme from 25 - 27 June 2009 includes a site visit, lectures, a social event and workshops. It will cover various aspects of school procurement, design and construction through the Building Schools for the Future and Primary Capital programmes, with a particular focus on how to achieve a successful and well designed school building.
