RIBA launches Singapore Chapter|
Working abroad|

British High Commissioner’s Residence, Eden Hall, Singapore
The RIBA launched the Singapore Chapter on 18 November – the first of a new series of chapters outside the UK and the USA, heralding a new phase of engagement with overseas members, and the wider built environment professions.
Supported by the UKTI, the launch was held at the British High Commissioner’s residence, and attracted a wide audience of developers, contractors, consulting engineers and government departments. Amanda Brookes, the Acting High Commissioner, set the tone for the evening by highlighting the strong contribution that RIBA members in Singapore and other countries have made in shaping the built environment in the region.
Launched in partnership with the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA), the chapter has been set up to encourage collaboration between qualified professionals. SIA President, Tai Lee Siang, welcomed the new initiative, and the collaborative spirit between architects of different nationalities, with their common goal of professional excellence. RIBA President, Sunand Prasad, also highlighted the relevance of the Chapter’s role in international knowledge exchange on key issues, such as combating climate change.

The RIBA’s ambassador in Singapore and former SIA president, Goh Chong Chia, outlined the Chapter’s aim to develop a series of talks, workshops, networking opportunities, professional development and educational activities. More specifically, it aspires to raise the profile and recognition of architects working in the region.
Whilst still in its formative stages, we look forward to the Singapore Chapter thriving and being shaped by its members and partners, to provide a solid working platform for the profession in Singapore.

In view of the increasing number of members contacting the RIBA recently about working abroad, we have collated some information that we hope will be of assistance. This is not intended to be a detailed, technical, “how to” document, but rather a compendium of general information – and links to other, more definitive, sources of information.
It includes commentary ranging from the general (cultural awareness; business concerns), to the specific (architectural practice issues, registration requirements, finding partners, priority markets, work opportunities and other sources of information. Members can access this document here|.
