Chapter Launch - British Embassy, Abu Dhabi
The Gulf Chapter was launched in October 2009 at the British Embassy, Abu Dhabi, to highlight the official presence of the RIBA within the GCC States and to recognise and celebrate the diversity and local culture of members and co-professionals working in the region.

Proceedings on the night included an address given by the Deputy Head of Mission, Ian Wood, and speeches from RIBA President Ruth Reed, and Sir Michael Hopkins of Hopkins Architects.
Education was the central part of the offering for the Launch and for the Chapter going forward. 'The RIBA Gulf Chapter has chosen educational institutions as the primary vehicle through which to consolidate ideas and hold discussions. The ultimate goal is to exercise the best ideas in practice, benefiting a much broader cohort: the architecture world and, most importantly, the city and its inhabitants' - Simon Crispe, RIBA Gulf Ambassador in an interview with TheNational.

The launch included a prize-giving ceremony and exhibition of the Gulf Student competition, 'Urban Exchange: The Souk', which brought together a number of schools in the GCC region to think about issues of context, place and sustainability within an urban context.
