Westborough Primary School is a three form entry primary school and nursery. Cottrell and Vermeulen have worked closely with the school for over twenty years on a variety of projects including extensions to the existing buildings, new playgrounds and the well-known Cardboard Building (RIBA Stephen Lawrence Award winner 2002).
The latest phase of work sees the refurbishment of the school's Edwardian buildings, while addressing some circulation problems inherent in the original layout. This modest and seemingly unpromising brief has nevertheless been transformed into a project of great charm and individuality.
This exemplary sustainable approach adopts passive strategies, such as improved insulation levels and air tightness, as well as energy efficient measures that include improved lighting and controls and better system management.
