A free lance journalist and amateur artist sought a self contained studio within his garden and set apart in style from his mid 19th C Suffolk home. The very small scale of this project has not prevented the architects from producing a high quality, well considered scheme. The barrel vaulted roof adds to the special quality of the design. The studio is a delight both inside and out and whilst it is undeniably a contemporary design, its fits perfectly in its garden setting.
Daylight and views are rightly, key aspects of the design. The decision to use a pair of doors gives a pleasing symmetry to the gable end and allows the client to write at a desk looking out into his garden. Solar gain is well controlled by the deeply over sailing roof and high levels of insulation mean that the smallest available wood burner stove is still rarely used. Its scale is just right against the adjoining garage. This is a little gem of a building, perfectly well suited to its function and confidently executed in a simple pallet of materials within a very limited budget. The client could not be more pleased, it gives him a fabulous quality of light and space in which to paint and write.
