The Governors sought, and the architects have delivered, an exceptional modern facility that unifies the existing school buildings and will foster continuing strong achievements in the school, that began 4 centuries ago. The new concourse and teaching block includes a refectory, offices, sixth form common room and 17 class rooms adjacent to the existing historic school. Its design resolves existing access issues particularly successfully.
The jury were wowed by this building. Internally the spaces are dramatic, full of interest and purpose. The design is dynamic using a series of internal balconies, levels, bridges and pods to create high and low spaces and the venues for teaching, utility, social and performance spaces all spill into one another. The architects, Peter Haddon and Partners, have skilfully designed an array of visually stimulating spaces that lift the spirits.
