The new ICT Learning Centre at Portland College provides teaching facilities for people with varying degrees of disability. It is a single storey building, with a double height volume in the reception area. The L shaped building derives its architecture from a wonderful woodland setting, and exhibits the architect's care for technique, particularly in the use of materials and application of sustainable principles.
The centre is spacious and relaxed, with something of that outside-inside feel about it, seemingly bringing the woodland right into all the spaces. The attention to detail is precise and consistent throughout.
This project has been endorsed at the highest level, winning both an RIBA Award and the RIBA's special prize for Inclusive Design sponsored by CABE. This demonstrates that good design results in environments that are safe, convenient and enjoyable to use by people, regardless of disability, age or gender.
