RIBA EM Award 2007: Commended

The University of Nottingham held a limited competition to, quite simply, improve the legibility of a restrained 60's entrance to a main campus building, which is hidden from direct view. Architects Marsh Grochowski responsed bydelivering this striking, kinetic canopy. This 'learning curve' canopy attracts the visitor's attention on arrival at the campus and guides them towards the building.

The critical design of the playful canopy is eight cantilevered double glulam frames which radiate out from the entrance forming the twisting structure which is covered with a fabric finish. The judges found it a joyful, lively and uplifting structure which demonstrated admirably the design flair and ingenuity which architects bring to the most modest of projects.
