The Manor housing development on the edge of Beeston town centre consists of 64 new apartments, 18 apartments in the existing school buildings, 15 affordable flats and a replacement Scout Centre.
The judges enjoyed the feeling of open space that has been created on this urban site and the mellow blend of materials and colours. The site is pleasantly devoid of cars, which are all parked beneath the landscaped courtyard. Long views have been protected through and out of the site, belying the compact plan form. The fabric of the converted school houses integrates well with the new.
The mixture of shared and private spaces, hard surfaces and green, create a sense of community. All front doors open onto the central shared spaces. The development is pleasing in scale and massing and the architects, Marsh Grochowski, have achieved a successful format through a palette of materials and finishes.
