The Construction Emissions Community of Practice is a response to the fact that requirements to achieve energy performance in buildings have focussed to date on operational efficiencies. This has led to a design emphasis that favours reducing energy usage to the detriment of the levels of embodied carbon and it is particularly apparent in commercial buildings. The Community of Practice was initiated by Simons Design and with founding members from consultant and academic organisations.

In addition to the seven founders, there are currently up wards of 30 organisations contributing to the Community. The group has indentified research topics and ideas that they might wish to cover. Amongst other activities the Community of Practice are working with the Construction Products Association, UKGBC and Carbon Buzz to establish a coordinated approach. The network is also building a catalogue of case studies to help the wider construction industry to adopt the procedures of declaration, not just for the purposes of labelling buildings, but as part of the design process. This is with a view to significant reduction of carbon footprint of all stages in a building’s life.
