The outward appearance of the ice cream parlour is to be high class ‘Victorian’ and staunchly traditional, yet internally it is full of sparkling state of the art surprises. The small interior of this fine stone building has been dramatically transformed by the bold application of steel, glass and exposed brickwork contrasting with the exemplary conservation of the building’s shell. Unobtrusively the former two storeys have been replaced by three storeys accessed by the new steel cranked stair with glass balustrades. Light streams in from the full width rooflight and successfully permeates the glass floors to reach the ground floor. Throughout the gelateria the customer senses the full volume of the building.
This is a design of distinction, a complex project on a tight site, achieved on a very small budget for a client with vision, belief and enthusiasm.
