The Icon office building on the Ropewalk is a radical and opportunistic design solution in Nottingham's Wellington Circus Conservation Area. The difficult triangular site was originally a single storey outhouse at the end of a short obliquely sited Victorian brick terrace dropping away from the Ropewalk. In contrasting design style, two storeys of office space have been added to the existing brick base with a bold, striking and angular design. With complex geometry, the upper floors cantilever out over the street, maximizing the rentable office space.

Contrasting the existing red brickwork, the new finishes are zinc cladding and render, picking up on the surrounding features. The zinc denotes the office space and the render denotes the circulation, stair well and ground floor. The structure is predominantly timber built off a concrete ring beam with an integral steel frame supporting the cantilevered upper floor area. Timber panels were manufactured off site to both enable the geometry to be achieved accurately and to reduce the on site working on this awkward site.
