This elegant, modern classical building is the first phase of an ambitious arts-science project at Oundle School. It provides a robust and timeless science teaching environment. ‘Learning by doing,’ the central guiding ethos of the school comes to life through the design response of this building. A greenhouse observatory, a lake edging the classroom side of the building, and the green roofscape, all encourage students to relate first-hand to these habitats and wildlife including involvement in the maintenance of the sedum roof.

The plan was simple and cost effective, with a repeatable layout over two floors. The environmental sustainability of the design response is considerably progressive. Simple, easy-to-maintain materials were sourced from the local area; orientation and roof design has significantly improved solar gain; low energy lighting; underfloor air circulation; and innovative uses of concrete significantly improve year-round insulation and thermal stability.
