This crisp and bright school, offering 3-16 yrs education and extensive community use, is located in one of the most deprived areas of Leicester. With a specialism in business and food technology, the Samworth Enterprise Academy aims to inspire the ethos of healthy body, mind and spirit and this is reflected in the design. The involvement of community is confirmed by the inclusion of the local church, with its timber ‘Drum’ marking the entrance to the school. The design revolves around the voluminous, cheery, naturally lit dining hall, used by pupils, parents, staff and others for social interaction throughout the school day, which opens off the central circulation spine. The three teaching zones are individual ‘ribbons’ off this spine, clearly identified by deliberate design features of bright colour, scale and location. Colour, light and clear crisp space are successful key themes throughout the interior and exterior of this School. Views from bridges, between teaching and general spaces and across courtyards draw this large building into one environment.
