Design intent to reality: closing the building performance gap - Nottingham

19 February 2014

2:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Venue:

MediCity, D6 Boots Campus, Nottingham NG90 1TW

Description:

What causes this performance gap? What can we do about it? And does it matter anyway? This seminar will unpick the varying factors that combine to make a building perform better, worse or differently than anticipated at the design stage. In addition to identifying the main reasons for the performance gap, the speaker will describe what architects and the construction industry can do to narrow it.

This presentation will explore how a building is commissioned, designed, operated and experienced by its occupants and ultimately will outline actions for securing better building performance in reality - for the client, its occupants and in terms of energy performance. The speaker will look at the role of the Soft Landings Framework for achieving better briefing, design, handover and building performance in use, and also cover approaches to conducting building performance evaluation, monitoring and feedback. Finally, this session will consider the concept of 'new professionalism' and what all this really means for architects.
