Designing for Accessibility

25 March 2009

2:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Venue:

Clifton Campus, Nottingham Trent University, Clifton Lane, Nottingham, NG11 8NS

Description:

What does it mean to the architectural profession?

It has been recognised by Government and society as a whole that it is imperative that people have equality no matter what their religion, racial ethnicity, physical or cognitive abilities.

There are many factors, which determine the way in which a building, premises or environment is built, commissioned, altered and operated. Clients of all building types will want to know how the Disability Discrimination Act affects them and how best to respond to ensure that their interests are met within affordable costs. Designers, providers and contractors need to be sure that they are providing a flexible building for the 21st Century and an inclusive environment for all. The seminar will cover the following content:

Legislation Overview - outline of the relevant inclusion legislation and its relevance to the construction and FM industry.

What is Disability? - a description of the variety and diversity of the population.

Access Statements - what are they, when do you use them, how do you write them?

The Process - how to interpret your clients' responsibilities and needs.

Practical Examples – a look at some of the common issues that can occur.

The seminar gives you three hours of general awareness and detailed knowledge CPD under the 'Professional Context – Design for accessibility' section of the RIBA Core Curriculum.

Speaker: Jane Simpson. Jane is an RIBA Architect and NRAC Access Consultant, with over 15 years experience in inclusion.
