It is fundamental that all building professionals have a thorough understanding of building defects. This half-day seminar will make a comprehensive examination of defect diagnosis through a wide range of building failures.
Subjects covered will include the collapse of the terminal at Charles de Gaulle airport, nickel sulphide and other glass failures, cladding failures and tracking the spread of disease in buildings. The seminar content will include:
Defects in Building - Diagnosing the cause

What is a failure? expectation, breach of relevant building code

What was the nature of failure?

Is it a failure? Who decides and how is it established?

What circumstances caused the failure? Errors of design, construction etc

Who should have avoided those circumstances occurring?

Was the failure avoidable in the circumstances?
Where are errors being made?

Design. Failures to relate to location, interfaces, required demands, clients expectations, innovation

Changes - cost reduction, failure to warn and identify

Tolerance - change in dimension due to moisture or heat

Ability of ground to carry load/ stability weather change

There will also be ample opportunity to get answers to your specific building defects questions.
The seminar gives you three hours of general awareness and detailed knowledge CPD mainly under the 'Construction Skills – Technical Innovations' section of the RIBA Core Curriculum.
Speaker: Professor Malcolm Hollis is a Chartered Surveyor and Building Pathologist. He is Consultant and Professor of Building Pathology at the University of Reading. He has authored books and publications including a series of Pocket Surveying Buildings, is a Member of the Validation Board for the RIBA and Managing Editor of The Journal of Building Appraisal.
