Designing for the Public Realm
Understanding how buildings, spaces and landscaping can create a desirable public realm for people is an important element of an architects’ portfolio of skills.
This seminar will examine general issues regarding design, delivery and management of public spaces and their infrastructures. The event will include a look at the impact of design on urban regeneration, the wellbeing of people who occupy and use public spaces as well as the social, economic and political factors influencing the design process. National and international case studies will be used to illustrate the core themes presented in the sessions.
The seminar gives three hours of general awareness and detailed knowledge CPD under the ‘Professional Context’ and ‘Construction Skills’ sections of the RIBA Core Curriculum.
Speakers:
Jaimie Ferguson, Urban Designer, Associate Director BDP
Jaimie is an urban designer and engineer, and recently worked on the Sheffield Economic Master plan and managed a strategic regeneration framework for central Manchester.
Paul Taylor, Landscape Architect Director BDP
Paul leads the creative aspects of landscape design within BDP’s urbanism group in the north of England. He is highly experienced in master-planning and concept design and champions place making, sustainability and the integration of art into the public realm. He is leading the landscape design team on ten new university campuses in Libya. He also led the public realm concept design team for Liverpool ONE.
