Ada Street is located in a Hackney conservation area and accommodates six apartments across three floors above two ground-level retail units. It is finished in a monolithic black render. The simplicity extends inside where precast concrete planks form ceilings and floors of power-floated concrete. Generally the approach was to choose standard products to reduce the number of specialist trades.
A low technology approach to sustainability was employed with walls, ground and roof levels super insulated and the building as a whole well sealed, though all windows are openable. Heating is seldom required.
With a built cost of £850psm this project demonstrates long-term value and is proof that good architecture need not be expensive.
