This is a quiet yet highly considered piece of architecture set within an unpromising back-land setting.
The client's aspiration is to enable development of difficult, constrained sites while creating a rich interior landscape. Here the buildings make a virtue of a sloping site to create a richly layered interior that compensates for a restricted exterior aspect offered by the unpromising setting.
As a result the dwellings do not feel introverted. This is achieved by carefully controlled inter-relationships between floors that encourage unexpected sightlines and an admirable diffusion of natural light through the staggered floor levels.
So although the developer set out to explore a building type, the resulting homes demonstrate considerable care, coordination and attention to detail giving them a cared-for, bespoke quality.
