One Hyde Park

One Hyde Park: The Residences at Mandarin Oriental, London

Practice: Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners
Client: Project Grande (Guernsey Ltd)
Photographer: Edmund Sumner

Although any project built with the construction cost of One Hyde Park should, in theory, be beautiful design, it requires a highly skilled architect to persevere in a milieu where pocketbook can override taste.

The design rationale for One Hyde Park by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners is thoughtful and clever, placing the service cores in glass risers between the building blocks and providing views through from the street to Hyde Park beyond.

The vertical shades, which from the exterior appear solid and antithetical to views, are proven effective from within, whereby the arrangement of spaces provide views to Knightsbridge or Hyde Park and privacy from the near neighbours. The layout within provides a flexible arrangement that works from one to too-many-to-count bedroomed flats.

The detailing is exquisite, the setting well considered, the materials modern yet respectful of those surrounding and the jurors believe this project deserving of a Regional Award.
