The project by Matthew Lloyd Architects at The RSA initially began as a much-needed renovation to the Great Room, and extended to include the ground floor. The main building is Grade I listed, and the renovation at the ground floor connected through to the adjacent Grade II* listed houses which are a part of the block on John Adams Street.

The project is exemplary in its simple interventions, which simultaneously restore the great room to its Georgian purity while very subtly integrating the complex modern technology required by the Society's lecture programme and its need for lettable function rooms.

The ground floor has been transformed from a maze of small rooms to an easily navigated sequence, creating a series of congregation spaces for members.
