When appointed five years ago, the new director realised the enormous potential for the museum to attract more visitors by opening up the side of the museum facing the park.

Visitors are now led down a series of ramped gardens to the strong, identifiable entrance. There is a generous foyer area with the café, shop, introductory exhibition and the usual information areas. Stairs within the lofty atrium lead down to an enormous special Exhibition Gallery below. The entrance is lit by elaborate roof lanterns, which heighten the experience.
