Introduction to Construction Design and Management Regulations (CDM)

This seminar goes back to the basics of the CDM Regulations and is aimed at remedying some of the misinterpretations and removing some of the myths that have grown in time since the Regulations were first introduced. The seminar is aimed specifically at designers and includes not just what "designers" should be aware of, but the duties of others identified in the Regulations and how the designer can benefit from the interaction of CDM.

Updated Building Regulations: Conservation of fuel & Ventilation (Part L + F)

The seminar will look at key 2010 changes to the regulations and technical guidance for Part L (Conservation of Fuel and Power) and Part F (Means of Ventilation). This will cover both dwellings and non-dwellings, existing buildings and new build. It will include details of new regulatory requirements, improvements in fabric and building services performance, and changes to commissioning and the provision of operational information.

Sustainability and Procurement: The role of the architect in effective decision making

The seminar will explore existing certification schemes for the responsible sourcing of construction products and make reference to existing green building rating tools. Using case studies and an overview of future and potential future requirements, this seminar is aimed at those wishing to better understand how design led decisions influence material specification and procurement. Dr Paul Toyne has led a programme of responsible sourcing of materials for Bovis Lend Lease as part of their overall approach to sustainability. The second part of the seminar will include an overview from Joanna Eley, author of the forthcoming Sustainability guide for RIBA Publications that focuses on information needed to create a brief that will deliver a sustainable outcome for clients.

Construction Design and Management Regulations (CDM) ADVANCED

Using case studies, this seminar is aimed at those with an understanding of the Regulations, and how design led decisions can be made without compromising the vision.The case studies show where basic designs, not exclusive to architectural design can go wrong and how remedial measures can be implemented at an early stage.The seminar will also show where other legislation may have a part in how the "finished" design can be influenced and will include elements such as the Regulatory Reform (Fire) Order (RRO) amongst others.

The first part of this seminar will consider the issues you need to address in negotiating your appointments and fee agreements. Subjects will include getting the right fee, demonstrating how your service adds value for your client, why you need a comprehensive appointment agreement and avoiding unnecessary liability exposure,and strategies for getting paid and maintaining cashflow. The second part will explore how benchmarking can help to balance professional creativity with improving profitability, and will look at the RIBA’s benchmark initiative, which is free to all Chartered Practices.
