Introduced in 2005 to reward and encourage excellence in architectural research carried out by PhD students, academics and practitioners, the awards were established with the awareness of the need for research across the profession in educational institutions and professional practices. The RIBA President's Awards for Research was awarded for the first time in 2006 to the best PhD thesis and University-led Research for their exceptional contribution to research in architecture. From 2007 all three RIBA President's Awards for Research will be given annually. The Awards are:

RIBA President's Award for Research PhD Thesis (for the best PhD thesis from an RIBA-validated School of Architecture)

RIBA President's Award for Research University-located Research (for a research project initiated in

RIBA President's Award for Research Professional Practice-located Research (for a research project initiated by an RIBA member or RIBA registered/chartered practice).
