The brief was to develop a multi-functional theatre for use by students and the community. Associated Architects have designed a technically effective and well-planned auditorium. The theatre has a powerful well day-lit quality and good adaptable range of spaces and associated acoustics. The tiered timber-lined auditorium is capable of a range of layouts and the lighting galleries are accessible to students.
The environmental strategy has been well thought through and energy use is good for a school. Materials generally are well considered and the build quality good. The east facade of fractured walls letting light into the auditorium clad in zinc shingles was most assured. The north elevation overlooking the river was also well handled and in keeping with the earlier classroom block development.
