Ruhunu University, Sri Lanka
A 96 acre coconut estate, comprising two hills and a natural amphi theatre, just half a mile inland from the sandy beaches on the south coast of Sri Lanka is the site of Ruhunu University.
The faculty buildings are conceived of as a series of pavilions linked by covered walkways, garden courtyards and gazebos. A series of spaces and places in which to gather, study, debate, ruminate or simply enjoy the views and sea breezes.
The pavilion buildings were developed using a common vocabulary; a pattern book of typical details using traditional crafts and techniques, which had been thoughtfully and skilfully developed by Geoffrey Bawa over many years of practice. Each pavilion responded to its particular context; views, orientation, subject. One is positioned overlooking paddy fields with double height viewing platforms and wind catchers, another has a rocky outcrop powering through its corridors.
Natural features are enhanced with typical Bawa flourish, the brackish mangrove swaps were dredged to make an artificial lake, the bridge over which all students cross to enter the landscape of the university.
