Description:

The Architect Alastair Lansley is going to take us though the magnificant project of St Pancras. The scale and complexity of the project demanded an exceptional response from all of those involved and in the view of the judging panel, that is exactly what this scheme delivered.

The construction of the new Eurostar Terminal and the renovation of St Pancras, particularly the Barlow train shed was undertaken in the context of enormous logistical complexity, having to maintain the service of five train operators. The design strategy had both coherence and drama.

The primary intervention was to remove a significant part of the concourse at platform level and allow those entering the station at ground level an uninterrupted view of the Barlow roof and the trains. It was a strategy that intentionally establishes the magnificence of the architecture.

Alastair Lansley is the 1st speaker for the 2010 'Architects on Architecture' lecture series, which is sponsored by Ibstock Brick Ltd and supported by both Newcastle and Northumbria Universities.
