Manchester is a restless place, whose skyline has been utterly transformed in the last twenty years. Symbolic of this change is this new tower by Hodder + Partners. Now the city's second tallest building, it is a marker for the emerging urban quarter that houses the majority of the University of Manchester's teaching buildings and student housing.
The tower diminishes as it steps down to match the scale of its surroundings, where it successfully completes Great Marlborough Street with a colourful infill building.
Housing students in tall buildings is a relatively new phenomenon in the UK and - far more appropriately than housing families and the elderly so far from the ground - this seems one plausible solution to the need to increase the densities of our post-industrial city centres.
