RIBA North West Small Project of the Year Winner
In every town there are moments when architects should speak with a quiet voice. This shining example of confident understatement offers a colourful moment of delight on an unpromising traffic junction in Burnley.
Inspired by the nearby railway viaduct this three arched gateway with its prismatic insets is a perfect follow up to Tonkin Liu's conversations with the environment of the Northern City, following as it does their nearby RIBA Award winning Singing Ringing Tree, set on the moor overlooking the town. One can only hope the authorities in Burnley will continue their wonderful patronage of the art of architecture with these thoughtful and inventive designers.
