RIBA North West Regional Award Winner
If you were to draw an arc to the west from Blackpool to Ireland and then around to the Lake District in the north your compass would rest on the site of this beautiful little building.
Leaning forward, the angled composition looks as if it is about to take flight to join the myriad of migrating birds that gather on the foreshore. As you climb through the building you pass the coast-guard's station before emerging on the birdwatchers' upper deck to enjoy the spectacular 360° panorama.
Its dramatic form, appropriately robust materials and muted colour palette to match its surroundings produce a little gem that will continue to delight locals, visitors and those who work in the building for many years to come.
