There is an ever-increasing demand for houses in the Lake District so the issue of how to convert redundant farm buildings without impairing the character of the fells is crucial. Vaugh Steil is therefore a case study.
The twin objectives of conservation and sustainablility are revealed in the thoroughness with which materials were researched and tested. The project incorporates a wind turbine, solar thermal panels and photo-voltaics, coupled with a high performance, air-tight thermal envelope and the use of high quality locally sourced materials with low embodied energy.
