Habitat: Architecture Symposium

02 May 2013

6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

the Bluecoat, School Lane, Liverpool L1 3BX

Five years after Liverpool’s contemporary arts centre the Bluecoat re-opened following a major capital development of its Grade One Listed building, this symposium looks at the collaborative design approach adopted by its Rotterdam architect, Biq.

Marking the publication of Habitat, a new book about Biq projects, including the Bluecoat, the discussion will be set in the wider context of urban development and cultural life, looking at regionalism, locality and Liverpool city centre’s recent regeneration. A panel of experts will ask what role might culture play in such developments and how can institutional buildings take on greater 'publicness'?

Biq lead architect, Hans van der Heijden, who describes the Bluecoat as 'a unique combination of village hall and avant-garde institute', is joined by Dr. Paul Jones (Department of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Liverpool), Mark Pimlott (visual artist, designer) and Ellis Woodman (editor of Building Design).

The event will be the UK launch of Biq's book Habitat.

There will be an opportunity for tours of the building after the symposium with the architect and Bluecoat staff, and drinks in the bar.
