Winners of the 2009 Arnold Sayers Housing Design Awards were announced at an event held on 29 October 2009 at the Levinsky Building, University of Plymouth, where the two winners collected their prize, a substantial stone carved award. The projects considered for the awards by a selected jury are located solely in Devon with two categories c single house design and group housing design and the prizes are given after a panel of judges considered each building entered in the scheme for their architectural quality and contribution to their own environment in the county.
Single House category

In the Single House category, Teignmouth RIBA Architect Annie Martin won the award for Seacombe in Salcombe. The building, located in an AONB and surrounded by National Trust land, is new and replaces an existing cottage in a very modernist idiom. The final solution blends very well into this rural environment and becomes part of the landscape though neither camouflaged nor over imposing. The solution is a neat compact building tucked into the hillside using an interesting array of materials all suited to both the final building use and to its rural setting. The attention to detail of all the materials displays a high standard of design commitment. Overall, the jury found this building an excellent design solution with a superb finish.
Group Housing category

ASHDA 2009 Winner Group Housing South Gate Harrison Sutton Partnership
ASHDA 2009 South Gate
Copyright: Harrison Suton & Kim Sayer
The winner in the Group Housing category is The Lamb and Heathway, South Gate in Totnes by RIBA practice Harrison Sutton Partnership of Totnes. The scheme of housing and flats spreads over a series of sites in Totnes where the design is a result of extensive consultation with the developers, local authority and the community. Whilst the whole development is a mix of differing sites and types of housing, there is a unity in the scheme although each section still has its own character. All of this gives the scheme a strong sense of place being so integrated into the history of the town, and whilst the materials are new they still blend in well.
