This new library is a thoughtful insertion into a restricted site alongside existing Grade II listed buildings. With local stone quarries exhausted, the architects developed a bespoke brick, its colour and texture harmonising with the existing stone. ‘Witches hat’ north lights animate the principal façade, bringing in light and natural ventilation, their bold expression, together with the crafted brickwork, give the building its identity.
The library is a successful, light, airy space, which has delighted the client and is enjoyed by all the pupils.
