Western Daily Press Community Award

In 2008, as part of the RIBA Town & Country Design Awards, RIBA South West partnered the Western Daily Press for a publicly voted Community Award for a building in the newspaper's circulation area. Over 22,000 votes were cast through the newspaper's website and the competition stimulated much online debate, with the Withywood Centre, Bristol, by Quattro Design Ltd, Bristol, winning a close vote.

How people and places have evolved and developed is fundamental to all our lives, and community buildings are often hard-fought campaigns to finance and realise, but are a focal element of everyday life and essential facilities. RIBA South West and the Western Daily Press want to reward buildings that have made a difference to their community, and through the Western Daily Press Community Award, again in 2009, we celebrated and highlighted that process and the people behind it, with Market House, Martock winning the 2009 award.

The Western Daily Press Community Award is shortlisted by a jury consisting of an RIBA architect, a Western Daily Press reporter and the client of the previous year's winning project. The shortlisted projects will then be featured in the Western Daily Press newspaper, and online, with the public having the final say on which project is crowned. This is a publicly voted award and entrants should be aware that their projects will be discussed and reported within publicly accessible online forums.

The winning project, as voted by readers of the Western Daily Press and Bristol Evening Post and online at www.thisisbristol.com| is presented at the RIBA South West Town & Country Design Awards ceremony which will take place at an awarding-winning location in Autumn 2010.
