RIBA Competitions celebrates 175 Years with 175 photographic images
1 - 24 December 2009
Architecture Centre, Bristol
2009 marks the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Royal Institute of British Architects. To celebrate this milestone and the remarkable buildings which have resulted from architectural competitions and in association with RIBA South West, the Architecture Centre in Bristol is exhibiting 175 images of RIBA competition winning projects.
The RIBA organises and runs competitions to encourage excellence in design. It does so for a wide range of clients – both public and private – which have resulted in a variety of landmark projects and iconic structures. These range from major public projects such as London's Millennium Bridge, The Sage Gateshead, Baltic and Wembley Stadium to the Urban Splash Tutti Frutti housing project and smaller structures, such as the De La Warr Pavilion at Bexhill on Sea and the Swivelling Wind Shelter in Blackpool.
A linked lecture by Director of the RIBA Trust Charles Knevitt titled Le Corbusier knew my father... The Life and Loves of the Architect of the Twentieth Century will be held at the Arnolfini on 17 December from 7pm with all ticket sales going to Shelter.
Regional Director of RIBA South West Jon Watkins said 'The RIBA South West region is excited to be hosting the 175 Exhibition at the Architecture Centre, Bristol as the Institute's signs off its anniversary year. To have this stunning visual history of architectural work available to view is a unique event for the region and the city of Bristol.
RIBA Presence at National Self Build & Renovating Centre
RIBA South West has secured a semi-permanent presence of RIBA member's work at Buildstore at Swindon - the National Self Build & Renovating Centre. A rotating exhibition of RIBA members work will be on show at the Centre which attracts over 20,000 visitors a year, many of whom are looking to build or renovate their own home. Visitors come from all over the UK, but specific strong areas for self build in the UK are the South West, Wales and the Midlands. The exhibition is supported by information on how to contact the RIBA Client Services team to get a referral on selecting an RIBA chartered practice for their project.
RIBA South West is calling for practices interested in exhibiting to contact the regional office on 0844 800 2767 and send in a brief PDF including images of suitable projects for display.
