Most of the techniques for achieving a low carbon building are well documented but

in practice the standards aimed for are often not achieved through lack of

understanding about what makes a highly insulated, airtight and energy efficient

buildingThis introductory course, also available as a full day seminar by the Green Register, will explain the straightforward building techniques that can achieve this and what can be done on site to improve build quality.

The speaker will cover the theory of breathing construction, airtightness, robust detailing and

natural ventilation. A typical breathing wall will be examined layer by layer to explain their

functions and the low environmental impact materials currently available. The topics covered

will include:

• The external envelope and breathing construction

• The essentials of airtightness

• Best practice summary

• Natural and passive ventilation

• Thermographic imaging techniques

• Demonstration airtightness test

Register Lucy is an architect with over 25 years professional experience and sustainable

expertise in the UK and the USA. She was a product specialist for five years at the

Construction Resources ecological building centre researching products and advising

architects. Lucy now runs her own sustainable architecture practice designing low

environmental impact buildings and she founded the Green Register of Construction

Professionals in 2000.
