BS9999 is a new British Standard replacing the old established BS5588 series of Fire Design codes which became obsolete in April 2009. The new BS9999 allows a more flexible approach to fire design, taking into consideration both the reaction of people and the fire growth characteristics of the building. This then translates to more sensible travel distances and exit widths. BS9999 provides a framework of design in between that of the Approved Document B and a fully Fire Engineered solution.

To use the standard, knowledge of how people react in fire and how a fire develops is a must, and this presentation takes you through this daunting process in easy-to-understand language.  Numerous examples and 'live' case studies will enhance this presentation.

Tony Clark has more than 30 years of experience working with the Building Regulations, particularly in the field of fire. In 1975, he became an operational fire-fighter with the local fire brigade and throughout his career he has attended fires and worked in fire safety departments, gaining real practical experience. He has worked on some of the UK's most prestigious buildings.

Tony retired as a Senior Officer from the London Fire Brigade after a 6-year secondment to the Home Office Fire Training College. Here he lectured in fire engineering to Fire Officers and students from around the world. As a Co-Founder of jhai ltd, a Corporate Approved Inspector, Tony currently heads the Fire Engineering division of the company, where his wealth of practical experience is utilised when dealing with complex projects and delivering lectures on fire-related subjects.
