16 November 2011
2:00 PM - 5:30 PM
Venue:
Armada House Conference Centre, Bristol
Description:
This session will look at the practicalities of refurbishing Georgian, Victorian, 1930’s and 1960’s house types using sustainable principles. Solutions such as internal and external wall insulation, floor insulation, natural materials and renewable energy technologies will be covered as well as some of the thorny issues of eco-refurbishment in conservation areas.
Sessions will also consider an extreme eco-refurbishment of a 1930’s house in Bristol demonstrating that a 70% reduction in energy consumption is possible. Measures taken to achieve the energy consumption reduction include external wall insulation, ground floor insulation and double layer of roof insulation, new high performance windows, attention to details and modifications in occupant usage. Additionally, the project sought to reduce water consumption and waste and used natural, low impact materials throughout the house including reclaimed timber flooring. Post occupancy data will illustrate how the measures taken have actually affected the impact of the house, including thermal imaging, airtightness test results, EPC and NHER rating and temperature monitoring over a 12 month period.
