Collaborative Working: an introduction to BIM enabled cooperation

26 April 2012

2:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Venue:

Harry Hems Centre, Longbrook Street, Exeter EX4 6AP

Description:

As design of the built environment becomes more technically demanding, new ways of delivering projects are emerging, with integrated working and BIM being driven by government construction.

It is clear that the industry is moving towards an integrated delivery approach, where consultants, clients and contractors work with a single, evolving virtual model of the building project. But then what will this new world look like? Who will be leading it?

How will it change the way we work? What is BIM and what does it mean to me?

The speakers will describe the role of BIM in the low carbon delivery agenda and analyse the barriers to adopting BIM and the challenges of the supply chain. They will explain what the government aspirations are for the future, question whether you may already be doing BIM and clarify the legal implication brought up when using BIM. The seminar will contain a practical demonstration of a BIM implementation.

This session is an introduction to the more advanced course to be held in Bath on 19 July and Exeter on 16 October 2012.

Speakers: Steve Race

was part of a team that developed one of the first 3D multi disciplinary CAD systems at Oxford Regional Health Authority 35 years ago, a system, which would now carry the label 'BIM'. Since then, he has accumulated a unique experience in co-operative working which embraces software platforms, business strategies, project team facilitation and a more collaborative legal landscape as means of exploring and implementing BIM.

Paul Fletcher

is the co-founding director of Through Architecture. He chairs the RIBA Construction Strategy Group, IGT Low Carbon Report and the Construction Clients BIM(M) Report. He is also co-chair of the CIC Task Force 3.6, a pan-industry group looking specifically at IGT Recommendation 3.6.
